BEFORE
We decided to start in the back bedroom with sanding and finishing the floors (we didn't get pictures of that room). Once that room was sanded the rest of the family said, "Let's move the couches and TV the do that room." Mind you, that room is our least favorite because when we bought the house and ripped up the carpet, there was lenolium(?) tile, then under that was this; tar paper glued to the original hard wood floors! HOW DARE THEY! We tried to scrape and do what ever we could to get the tar paper up but nothing worked. So we covered it with a big rug and scraps of carpet to make it habital. So we moved the drum sander we rented from Home Depot into that room and went to town.
DURING
As you can see it is 1000 times better, that sander worked miracles on our floors. We got the sand paper with the smallest girt, basically with rocks on it. It just ate up the tar stuck to the floor and made a very beautiful floor that we could work with.
DURING
This is Tyler puting the first of three coats of varnish on the floor. You can see what a world of difference it has already made to the floor and it wasn't even dry. Our floors just loved that varnish, soaked it right up.
This is just a closer picture of the floor. You can see in the upper right corner, is the hallway going into the kitched, there is lenolium(?) and under that is a really thin piece of plywood of sorts, we pried that up a little bit and that nasty tar paper is all the way through the kitchen too. That will come last, thank you!
AFTER
This is the finished product. We pulled the paneling off the walls, it's amazing how much larger the room seems without all that paneling in your face. It has only taken us about 5 years to get to this point.
